The Humanities Institute, with support from the CLAS Dean’s office, offers support for two humanities book manuscript workshops each academic year—one for CLAS junior faculty, and one for CLAS mid-career faculty.
Junior Faculty Manuscript Workshop Award
With support from the CLAS Dean’s Office, UCHI offers funding for book manuscript workshops to support humanities faculty in UConn’s College of Arts & Sciences as they prepare to publish a book. Humanities book manuscript workshops offer a structured environment for the refinement of a junior tenure-track CLAS faculty member’s book manuscript-in-progress. UCHI will provide up to $4,000, plus administrative support, for a Manuscript Workshop with the UConn author, two invited outside scholars, and (if the candidate desires) UConn colleagues whose feedback would be useful.
The UCHI staff will support the candidate in the weeks leading up to the workshop, including inviting their proposed guest scholar(s) and processing the guest scholar’s honorarium and travel.
We offer the use of the UCHI conference room for the workshop, if scheduling allows. It is up to the candidate and their department to decide if they would like to invite other members of the UConn community and to ensure that the visiting scholars have the materials in time before the workshop. We also urge the candidate to speak to their respective Department Heads to ensure that workshop members can be invited as reviewers in the PTR process.
Funds may be used to cover the combined honorarium and travel (up to $1750) for two outside scholars; a working lunch (up to $200), and to offset a dinner with outside scholars (up to 300).
Mid-Career Faculty Manuscript Workshop Award
CLAS Faculty who have been at the rank of Associate Professor with tenure for at least five years, and who plan to apply for the rank of Professor after publication of their manuscript are invited to apply for a Mid-Career Book Manuscript Workshop Award. Humanities book manuscript workshops offer a structured environment for the refinement of a mid-career CLAS faculty member’s book manuscript-in-progress. UCHI will provide up to $4,000, plus administrative support, for a Manuscript Workshop with the UConn author, two invited outside scholars, and (if the candidate desires) UConn colleagues whose feedback would be useful.
